The pulpit is built of beautifully, veined and polished alabaster, supported on serpentine marble columns, and with steps of white marble tracery panels, four of which contain carved emblems. There are the four Evangelists, beginning on the North side with a winged man, representing St Matthew, a lion, the emblem of St Mark, an ox, the symbol of St Luke and an eagle which represents St John.
Look for all these emblems in the tracery lights at the top of the East window. In the niches at the angles of the pulpit are statuettes of the four Evangelists. Can you see the head of Christ in the centre? Look in your bible and read Revelations, chapter 4, verse 7.
